May 28, 2016 (the day after the San Diego wedding)
I know, right? We were going to do this the day before the wedding, but we realized that it would rapidly turn into the plot of every Vegas wedding movie ever if we tried to relocate to San Diego the day of the wedding. So we decided to do it the day after.
One of the things we hate is when people have a remote wedding, and then also make people come out a week or two ahead of time for something else.
So our thinking was that people could make a round-trip out of all this, and then on decide on Sun if they wanted to go back to San Diego to finish out Memorial Day weekend, or just stay in Vegas. Either way, since it's a holiday, you still get two days to mess around.
We'll leave for our honeymoon on Sunday afternoon thus allowing you the freedom to rip on the wedding after that.
For Detroiters who haven't done the Vegas math before, unlike Californians or SLC residents:
DTW>SAN (drive to vegas) LAS>DTW or
DTW>SAN>LAS>DTW or
DTW>SAN>LAS>SAN>DTW
San Diego is a pretty fun city. But Dustin loves Vegas. And Lisa wouldn't get married there. So everyone wins. So let's have a great night in San Diego. Get brunch on Saturday, and then hit the road. Let's have a crazy time.
If you're from Michigan or Seattle and not LA or Salt Lake, then you probably don't realize that San Diego and Las Vegas are only a 4 hour drive apart. So it's not as totally apeshit a plan as you'd think.
Yes, this is "planning", but think of this whole trip as a FRAMEWORK for a great trip. Not a micro-managed trip. What you do, and when/how you do it is really up to you - but we're trying to have a most-common framework so everyone has a great time. After you RSVP you'll see the google doc we're using to keep tabs on everyone and help like-minded people find each other.
Please come, imagine the ridiculous crap we're going to get into together.
Please come, imagine the ridiculous crap we're going to get into together.
The sooner this idea sounds amazing AND feasible for you, please let us know. It really makes it easier to plan for all the variables. We have an amazing group of friends and such who we think would have an all-time great time in Vegas, and we'd like to put theory to the test.
...Or, don't RSVP because you can't go/don't want to. Which I guess is an RSVP of sorts?
Transportation and Lodging.
Transportation and Lodging.
I might have over-optioned everything but there's enough variety to make things impossible - so here's what we've run the math on to make things make sense:
Fly from San Diego to Vegas on Southwest.
30 minute flight. about 75-99 bucks (or 5,000 miles), leaves practically every 45 minutes. Flights are really cheap on Saturday, ironically, because it's already into the weekend.
Rent a car, carpool and drive from San Diego to Las Vegas
4 hour drive. SUV rentals are about 110-140 (depending on when and where you return it). Why SUV? Well 5-7 of you can get together and split that cost.
Sidle up to one of the people who live in LA and are driving to Vegas in their own cars
That's up to them if they want to do that. I'm not presuming. I guess we can see how well you schmooze.
Returning: Where/when/how you return is up to you. Logistically it's almost impossible without full booking authority, and that's over-planning anyway. You're all cool.
Now that we have the tent-pole of the cabana in the ground, we've set the central location as being the Aria complex. Which gives you a bunch of related hotel options within a 5-10 minute walk to wherever we want to meet (in groups, or all together, or whatever). Here's what probably works best:
Room rates are running about 230-450+ per room. Some of you guys will undoubtedly bundle up and stay together, and I think I've set up the google doc to help facilitate that for you to do so.
Don't forget - check them deals! AAA members can save about 10%, signing up to one of the casino programs could save you 10%, booking through expedia could save you 10%. You could try a secret hotel deal as well.
Please Note: If you're staying til Monday (some of you are) - room rates and actual hotel availability is way better (like 100-200 dollars cheaper). So if you're really clever, sidle up to people who are staying til Monday (even if you're not), bunk up with them and amortize that rate.
This will get updated once we have more information. But for now, here's what it looks like.
We now have a Google Doc that is acting as the master agenda here - so if you want to have some say in your destiny, or for more specific planning, here's your link:
